Square Enix Denies Rumors of a Final Fantasy 7 remakeIn a move sure to surprise absolutely no one whatsoever, Square Enix had some choice words to share in response to the latest rumors regarding a possible Final Fantasy VII remake. The June 2006 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly stirred up plenty of speculation and "confirmation" talk after the magazine stated that a remake was in the works.
"Last year," the caption stated, "Square Enix teased everyone with that it called the 'FFVII PS3 tech demo.' Well, what do you know: This test case was really a sneak peek at a next-gen revival of the PS1 role-playing hit."
Square Enix denied the rumor as speculation: "Since the Final Fantasy VII tech demo at E3 2005, there have been a lot of rumors about the presentation hinting at an actual remake. While the June 2006 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly confirms the remake for release in 2007, Square Enix has never stated this." The company then followed up by reaffirming the development of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII for the Playstation 3, as well as Final Fantasy Agito XIII for mobile devices as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Project.

Square Enix Talks Present, Future and Final Fantasy 7 RemakeIn an interview with Japanese publication Dengeki PS producer Yoshinori Kitase and character designer Tetsuya Nomura talked about their plans for the new year. Just in time for the introduction of the next generation of hardware, Kitase felt he had to make an action-oriented game. The result of this idea was the upcoming PlayStation 2 gun action RPG Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. Regarding the hot topic of a Final Fantasy VII remake, Kitase felt it could have been done, provided the company had only released two Compilation of Final Fantasy VII games and managed to match timing and schedule. The creation of the PlayStation 3-based opening sequence demo alone took 2-3 months, hence remaking the entire game would take a considerable amount of time.As far as his upcoming schedule is concerned, Kitase confirmed his team will begin working on next generation games, but the hardware platform(s) had yet to be decided. However at the same time he confirmed that he will work on the previously announced PlayStation 3 installment of the Final Fantasy series. No concrete plans have been made so far, as he was just beginning to understand what could be done with the next-generation consoles. Since the quality of the games will increase, development cycles will inevitably become longer as well.
Tetsuya Nomura for his part explained that once the development of Kingdom Hearts II was completed, he would move on to a new project. He ruled out that this new project would be a remake of Final Fantasy VII, and simply put he would not work on a remake or sequel. The success of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and the possibility to display the world of Final Fantasy VII with today's technology, gave him a boost of confidence.
The duo also had a lot to say about Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. The scenario part of Square Enix's first PlayStation Portable game is pretty much complete, even though development has not reached the stage where the company would be in a position to disclose any content. As the trailer that shipped with the Japanese version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children already suggested Crisis Core will focus on the story of Cloud's old buddy Zack. According to Nomura, development on the project is progressing without any major problems. However since many staffers are involved in other projects, the development team has not been able to begin working on Crisis Core in full force. The plot however has already been completed. Nomura also confirmed that objects were already moving in-game and currently research was done to figure out battle control schemes, etc. Originally Crisis Core was planned to be less complex than console-based games, but as development progressed, it has moved closer to a console-based game in terms of gameplay.
Square Enix plans a major announcement for next year's Electronic Entertainment Expo which will include Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Last but not least, Nomura admitted that he is spending a lot of time thinking about how to conclude the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.
Kitase: Final Fantasy VII remake will take 5 yearsSpeaking in an interview with American magazine EGM, Final Fantasy director Yoshinori Kitase spoke out about a potential
Final Fantasy VII remake, saying that if Square Enix were to seriously pursue such a project, it would require a staff of 300 and take 5 years. Nomura commented as well, stating that even if the team were to come together to produce a new version of the game, the various members are currently too caught up in their own projects to be able to reserve any time for it. EGM speculated that the possibility of a FF7 remake lies out of reach as long as the next PS3 game to be created is Final Fantasy XIII.

PS3 Final Fantasy VII Tech Demo more than a demo? One of the highlights of the trailer compilation shown in one of the main theaters on the showfloor of the Square Enix Party 2005 is the PlayStation 3 technology demo of the opening sequence of Final Fantasy VII. Ever since the short clip's debut in May during Sony's E3 press conference, there has been talk that the footage shown is evidence that Square Enix intends to release a remake of the FFVII. The talk started up again with renewed interest as the clip took center stage during a compilation of trailers being shown of upcoming Square Enix games. We took the opportunity to talk to a Square Enix rep for the internal division within the company whose focus is the properties relating to Final Fantasy VII to get the scoop.
Square Enix's initial response to our inquiry about whether or not the tech demo is suggestive of a full game being in the works fell in the realm of carefully worded corporate response. The reps noted that, as was mentioned at E3, the demo was created to show just how power of the PlayStation 3 technology. As a result, it is a tech demo only and is not intended to indicate that a PS3 remake of FFVII is presently under active development at the company.
However, when pressed, the reps also noted that further plans for content based on FFVII haven't been set, per se. They affirmed that the resulting reaction from fans over the demo footage and the content related to FFVII being shown at the party has been overwhelmingly positive. As a result, provided fan reaction continues to be feverishly positive over the demo and the very notion of a FFVII remake, it's certainly something that Square Enix would bear in mind when planning future projects.
Does this mean it's on? Probably not at this exact moment but, at this point, we're willing to bet it's not a matter of if an FFVII remake will happen, but a matter of when.
