the trailer for the PS3-exclusive RPG was shown just this Monday at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, at Los Angeles. it seemed that the protagonist this time is a girl, wielding what looked like dual pistols and a gunblade-looking weapon. the battle system is EXTREMELY fast, like what you would expect from an action game. from what i've seen, there is a combo system wherein your attacks become more and more powerful as a chain is executed, similar to that of X-2's. the graphics are also very much detailed and life-like that i had difficulty distinguishing cinematics from gameplay footage (in fact, IGN reports that a gasp was heard from the audience when the "movie" that was shown was actually made from the in-game graphics, since there were an assortment of menus here and there). the press release also boasted "intuitive controls" and real-time battles which would further point to the fact that this is an action RPG.

XIII's staff was actually the very same ones who made the technical demo of FFVII for the PS3, who, instead of working on a VII remake, were pulled out of the production and made to work on XIII. the PS3 Final Fantasy's society seems to be highly technological driven, surpassing even that of VIII, since the first scene in the trailer involved a speeding train in a high-tech tunnel. Square-Enix also gave away the impressive White Engine which was used for FFXIII, resulting in the best graphics and performance of the FF series to date, and they said that this game engine will make full use of the PS3's muscle.

Final Fantasy XIII is one of the 3 FFXIII about to be released, all of which will be released on the next-generation consoles--the Final Fantasy Agito XIII, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Agito XIII is a wireless game for mobile phones, and said to be the prequel for XIII itself. meanwhile, Versus XIII is a sequel to XIII itself. Tetsuya Nomura and the staff of Kingdom Hearts 2 worked on this one for character and action design (btw, Nomura himself directed XIII), which was why the protagonist in Versus XIII looked like Kadaj in Advent Children. Versus XIII will also run on the PS3.

all three XIIIs are in a package called "Fabula Nova Crystallis", or the "New Tale of the Crystal", kinda like the Final Fantasy VII Compilation. however, unlike the latter, Fabula Nova Crystallis run on a parallel storyline although they share a common "mythology". since XII used the theme of FF Tactics, i think XIII will use the theme of Crystal Chronicles this time around.

more on this as soon as information is released. ^_^

Ah, good. We don't need any more remakes. :P

yeah, the graphics were just amazingly good...and the battle system is very unique...it's somehow similar on FF XII's battle system....

i don't know why some hated the changes in the battle system and character design plus world of FFXII...

actually i'm pretty interested in this game!

the battle system became really dynamic and active!

plus Ashe was just charming..

i played FF tactics and FF tactics advance.. so i'm used to the environment and atmosphere of FFXII... :)

you're right dude!!! haha, Lightning(main char's name) resembles Cloud!

btw,

UPDATES!!! (from Weekly Famitsu)

- the magazine speculates that "Lightning" will be the character's name (the girl shown in the trailer).

- Final Fantasy XIII was actually meant for the PS2. however, when the technical demo of FFVII for the PlayStation 3 was released, the developers quickly realized the potential of the PS3 and instead moved the entire project for the said next-gen console. the staff was composed of Tetsuya Nomura as the director and character design and the staff of Kingdom Hearts 2 for the battle system, plus those people who made the FFVII PS3 tech demo.

- right next to the word "Lightning" is something called "ATB Cost". for FF newbies "ATB" stands for "Active Time Battle", the good old meter of previous FFs that showed how soon your character's turn would come. Famitsu reported that apparently, selecting a command has a corresponding ATB cost.

- at the upper left portion is a big radar. although the previous FFs had maps, i suppose FFXIII has a map and a radar; the former for the field, and the latter for battle. this gives more credence to the idea that XIII is an action RPG hybrid. with this radar, the enemies and their positions are quickly established.

- at the upper right (i think this is only for battles) is kinda like a swirl design, a circle of some sorts. Famitsu says that when a number inside that circle (i can't make it out from the trailer though) and some certain conditions are met the character will enter an "Overclock" status. in this state, the environment's time slows considerably while boosting your own (or you won't be affected). Famitsu goes on to say that there is a "risk" that goes with Overclocking. i'm beginning to feel like it's the new Limit Break system...

- it will be possible to switch between the gun-rifle-shotgun-blade modes of "Lightning"'s weapon, depending on the opponent and/or the situation, says Famitsu.

my observations:
- there are a total of five commands in the Command Menu (the set of menus usually on the lower left of FF battle screens, where you can select what you want to do when your turn comes). usually, a normal attack is at the top, but on XIII, it's second from the top. i can't make out the others; they're in Japanese. when you select a command, the command will be highlighted in yellow for the duration of the turn or the duration of the effect of the command. the fourth from the top is the Magic command.

- i noticed that it has a system similar to... er, Xenosaga II. you can attack multiple times, the last hit being a knockdown or sending an enemy to the air. in the trailer, Lightning (let's just call her that for now) attacked once then followed it up with a high angle hit, forcing the enemy to the roof where there was an additional damage from colliding with it. destructible environments? SWEET. i think if you can control other characters in the party you can follow it up with an attack in mid-air after the previous one had finished.

- the Overclock state has a duration, and can be activated (from my viewpoint) anytime. i believe that the Overclock gauge recharges over time and the duration of the status depends on how much it is charged.

- above the ATB Cost gauge and the character name is a bar where it shows the current command selected and in action. this is called the "Information" area.

- the ATB Cost gauge recharges as long as you don't chain commands like crazy. think the Fury meter in Star Ocean 3. every command, every movement, costs a specific amount of ATB points, and only when you stand still (in XIII, when you arent doing anything at ALL =p) does it recharge.

E2 LNG MNA GUYS!! ANG LUPET NITO AMF... LIGHTNING!!! IM READY TO HAVE YOUR BABIES!!! XD
