Title: Cosplay Hair and Wig FAQs
Description: help fellow cosplayers know more! ^__^
Chibi-kun - November 25, 2005 10:23 PM (GMT)
hello fellow cosplayers, after being bored for several hours I decided to make a little thread on cosplay hair and wig Q&A. Since this is a cosplay forum we should share our knowledge with one another. ^_^
this is a place for open discussion and question/answers concerning cosplay
from faqs about wigs and hair to tutorials on how to do a certain characters hair style
Hair FAQs
Q: Why is my hair getting too thin?
A: Thinning hair has got to be one of the most common issues in women and in most cosplayers. Why does it happen? Whats the cause of it? I use to have thick hair but now its all gone?
Many blame it on extensive hairdying, others think otherwise. So I brought up this topic in the Cosplay.com forumes since it has been an ongoing issue with me as well.
And no, hair dye is NOT the answer to thinning hair! O.O imagine my shock. Actually, most hair dyes actually come with deep conditioners to keep hair from getting damaged but whats the real cost (brought up by Alexia) was that recent surgeries that has required shots of anesthetic causes hair to fall out and not be replaced.
On a personal level I have went through several surgeries for my leg and arm and has long said goodbye to my thick locks. But that doesnt mean the world is over!. This fact has indeed been justified by both a surgen and a hair dresser with 30+ years of experience.
Now how do we keep our hairs healthier to compensate for thinner hair? I was actually recommended by a product called Mill Creek Shampoo - Biotin and was told that any product with Biotin should help hair grow healthier. Plenty of proteins and gelatin (oO) yes gelatin to help hair and nails as well as good conditioners should help.
Lets not forget hairs natural oils. As icky as it sounds its actually good for us and our hairs. So my suggestion (and I've been told this several times) is to avoid washing your hair with shampoo for more than 1-2x in a week since shampoo strips hair of any dirt as well as oils.
Scared of dying your hair like crazy? personally my hair has been suffering dying damages since I was in the 2nd grade which is when I first dyed my hair and its still alive! XD
"My hair is just naturally thin instead of thick and bushy) and i color my hair all kindsa crazy colors all the time, and people tell me i should be bald by now because my hair should be ruined by all the coloring - but my hair is insanely healthy! Shiney, soft, perfect, beautiful hair! And all because i keep those natural oils in my hair as long as i can stand them!" -TribalButterfly
And so, as you can see I too can testify to that quote and proof and I suggest you all do the same as well ^_^ (keep your natural hair oils)
Special Thanks to: Alexia Ishtar, Tenebrae and TribalButterfly
Q: Gusto ko kulayan ang buhok ko for a convention over the weekend, pero gusto ko permanent lang para ma washout ko before my parents/job/school kills me.
A: most (if not all) pinoy cosplayers have darker hair, alot would use the spray in hair color. but personally, I would not suggest that kasi it dries out your hair like hair spray and its sticky and on humid/hot days (especially sa pinas) they tend to melt off your hair and make a big mess.
the best solution to do is get a wig. Invest in a wig that you know you can style, cut and reuse for future cosplays.
There are 'special effects' hair dyes that tend to work on darker hair but some tends to stay for a month or less and usually they just give your dark hair highlights.
If you have lighter hair (blonde - light brown) there are several hair dyes you can use without using the spray in stuff and these work better:
-Maniac Panic usually last a week or two
-L'oreal Color Pulse is like a mouse that you apply in the shower and it lasts for 3-7 days. (usually 3 days max)
-Mascara also works to help give highlights (even on darker hair)
-ICE Spikerz are coloured hair glue/gel that washes away
-Garniers has hair dye that comes in reds, and black blue (I used the black blue for Hinata)
Para mawala yung dye ASAP, you can use Prell shampoo, Dawn dishwasher soap (liquid), Tide and even toothpaste.
alot of us dont have to worry about dying our hairs black pero, if you have color treated hair and will dye your hair black...dont do it! Unless you want to. Because black dye will not come off. Bleach will just slide off and will cause damage to your hair. It is possible to strip the black dye out of your hair but its gonna cost alot of money and even if you use semi-permanent black dye, the chances are it will stick.
About the Garnier dye, mine lasted for atleast a month (or less) and I had color treated hair. Alot of the natural dyes lasts for as long as you use them or the color comes out as long as you keep them in your hair.
Q: How do I bleach my hair?:
A:before bleaching your hair you need to think about what your doing. Your turning your all natural black hair blonde. Platinum Blond even. I am no professional so I cant exactly give you advice if you should do it or not but what I can tell you is: your hair will be damage badly. If you plan on getting your hair bleach get it done professionally as opposed to doing it at home.
After scanning cosplay.com alot of people have suggested using a lower volume of bleach (20-vol, or 30) it all depends on how dark our hair is.
Be warned of sometimes uneven color tones but I've tried usin Clairol shampoo thats called "Shimmer lights" and it even out the red/yellow tones in the hair.
There are also alot of athome bleaching kits you can get.
if you want lighter hair without bleaching it, I used L'oriel hair dyes that comes in blonde/brown and I had black hair. I used the dye and left it on my hair for atleast an hour and a half and the results came out brownish blonde and these kits usually comes with intense conditioners.
Wig FAQs
-special thanks to cosplay.com members for helping me
Q: What are wigs made of?
A: wigs are usually made of plastic.
the best quality wigs you can find are under: Kanekalon at saka Toyokalon. Marami ring mga synthetic fiber wigs, pero when you buy it onlines you are taking a gamble. Kasi marami ay maganda and quality pero meron ring mga hindi.
Personally, from my experience I have yet to come across a really bad synthetic wig. Of course meron ring mga cheap wigs on halloween that are made of synthetic but its still workable. But the ones I've seen of the better synthetic are usually the Japanese synthetic ones as well as Eleora and Monoacrylics.
Amphigory.com carries the kanekalon wigs that Katie Bair uses when shes doing wig commissions.
Q: How do I keep a wig from slipping off my head?
A: wig caps are the best to use! you can buy them from most salon stores or any store that carries wigs or from Katie Bair. You can also make one out of an old pair of stockings.
If your using a hair net, you usually pin the wig onto the hair net and onto your head as well using a Ball Tip Hair Pin. Their safe for wigs and they dont hurt!
You usually use pins either way if your using a wig cap or hair net. They also keep the wig in place
Q: Are wigs safe to wear in the pool?
A: I wouldnt recommend it, but I will be doing a small experiment with that sometime soon but I believe it may take away the shine of the wig due to the chemicals that goes into the pool.
Q: what goes on wigs and what shouldnt?
A: wigs are not hair! XD lets begin on what should not go on wigs:
simple. Hair gel, hair gel works with the natural oilsin the hair/scalp/pores, wigs does not have them.
what you can use on wigs: aquanet, pomade and hairspray.
Q: How to detangle a wig?
A: do not brush a wig for risk of tearing out too much fiber (hair) use a comb and be sure to sharpen down the 'teeths' so that they will not do any damage to the wig, Katie Bair sells them as well as wig detanglers.
Alot of people use a spray bottle and water, there are also people who use spray bottle with baby oil and just use their hands to comb it through.
L'oreal kids detangler works as well.
Q: How do I straighten a wig?
A: hot water and straightening irons work the best. But hot water is the safest to use.
use warm water (not hot to the point you can melt the wig or burn yourself) and pour it over the wig which should be clamped on a foam head and let it air dry and from there finger comb it and repeat.
Using straightening irons are harder and gives you the risk of melting the wig. before you buy a wig, magtanong kayo kung ano ang melting point ng wig. Always keep the heat on a low heat and keep the iron moving, never keep it in one place for too long or it will melt the wigs plastic fibers.
Q:How do I dye a wig?
A: The wig must be at a ligher base than the dye you want it. Katie Bair sells special wig dye.
there are several techniques used to dye the wig without using wig dye from Katie Bair. The sharpie or the Copic markers works well. Coloring it by hand using the markers or using a spray bottle, add alcohol and the ink of the pen inside it and spray the wig.
Q: How to get rid of the color/dye in a wig?
A: Usually if you want to reuse a wig or just made a mistake in coloring you can easily get rid of the dye you used in the wig (this will not lighten the wig)
place the wig in a big zip lock bag and pour alcohol in it. Shake the wig around it until you think its completely clean off the wig dye. But doing this will get rid of the shine in the wig so you can always reconditioner it later.
Q: How can I lighten the color of a wig?
A: like I said before, wigs are not hair so using bleach will not help.
I heard placing a wig under the sun can lighten the wig but you will not have control over how light it will become.
Q: How do I store wigs I'm not using?
A: Usually, wigs (preferably the ones that are pre-styled) be kept pinned onto a foam head. But if the wig is not in need and does not require heavy stylings to be preserved and you dont own a foam head. You can either use a big bottle of coke and keep your wig on it to keep it from tangling together (if its a long wig) or you can just throw it in a zip lock bag and store away!
Character hair styles for cosplay
Q: I want to cosplay as Hyuuga Hinata from Naruto, and I want to use my real hair/wig
A: With ear lenght hair: preferable you have your hair layered or atleast shorter than shoulder lenght hair. I have grown my side burns to attain the 'longer side bangs' on each side which would work perfectly for both Hyuuga Hinata and Kinomoto Sakura cosplay.
I have dyed my hair from a brown/black color using Garniers black hair dye which gives tints of blue when directed at the sun. Having darker hair doesnt really help make the blue appear but I found using blue mascara or hair spray, it helps highten the hair color without prebleaching.
many people make the mistake of using a straightening iron and 'flipping it inwards' which gives your hair some volume. Wrong. As you've seen, Hinata's hair is pretty straight forward and sharper in the back. Run the straightening iron through your bangs and through out your hair.
For the back, while running the straightening iron run awhole load of hair spray to help shape the sharpness of the back of her hair. You'd even notice that your almost doing Sasuke's hair but sharper and more fuller. After running the hair straightener and hair spray, use your hands to help continue shape the back hair and have a friend spray hairspray like crazy XD
For wigs, I would suggest getting Cosplay.com's Melissa wig in a black or dark brown base and custom dying it with a blue or purple color to help give it the tints needed. Achieving Hinata's right hair color/tone is pretty challenging but when I used my real hair before as I cosplayed as hinata. I colored my hair as the base of black blue and added washable purple highlights to achieve the more blue/purple tones which worked perfectly.
Q: How do I do Sasuke's hair style from Naruto?
A: -got rid of the photos-
What you will need: HAIR SPRAY IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. I cannot stress this as much. Gel, Mouse, Blowdryer/hair straightener.
Also, take note that my hair has not been washed in a day which means the natural oils of the hair is still there inwhich gel needs to work. Gel cannot work on wigs because it works with the natural oils of the hair.
First off, you will have to run the hair straightener through your hair. Front bangs and especially the back part which we will be spiking. Unfortunately I have misplaced my hair straightener as of this moment so I will skip that picture.
While you run the hair straightener through the hair, quickly back it up with hair spray. By this time I should be good to go. But for longer hairs or longer wears. I would do the hair straightening then gelling it/mousing it first. And I mean alot of it. Or you can do both. But inbetween gel and mouse you should wait for it to dry by using a blowdryer, electric fan or be patient and wait infront of your ps2 XDDD
For this, I decided to go ahead and use gel. I use those cheap gels with extra super hold but the hold doesnt stay too long especially in conventions or in school TT_TT. But for the sake of doing the tutorial now I will make do with what I have.
For thicker hair, I would suggest still running a hair iron over your hair, have it layered and have the 'top' shorter than the rest so its alot easier on gravity and on your hair. Try using hair glue and quickly follow it up with hair spray. Or you can also use gel and hair spray together. But that means using alot and I mean alot of hair spray. Testing both would be good as well. Though I believe using hair glue and hair spray would be better for those with thicker hair.

ei^_^ that was really nice^_^.... It's the first time I've seen detailed infor about wig care and styling.^_^ I just usually rely on Katie Bair's website for info.^_^; I have a few wigs, and I wish I can purchase that detangler formula you are talking about, but sadly it's not sold in the Philippines... the best I have seen is the spray on wig formula to make it shiny.-_-;
Anyway... these would be helpful for Filipino cosplayers... but sadly, not all cosplayers can buy a wig.... the cost of the wig, is almost the same price they will spend on their costume (example would be naruto costumes) if they do the costume themselves.^^;;;
Chibi-kun - November 26, 2005 02:23 AM (GMT)
oi salamat, oonga wigs can be expensive but it saves you years of hair damage ^_^ and you can always reuse wigs. The detangler formula isnt sold there but i've named a few other ways to help detangle wigs.
ill continue to add more info and tutorials ;)

note:
for both of this characters, people tend to use their real hair and usually a wig sometimes. Alittle inaccurate since they tend to use a black wig. Alot of them forget the fact that Hinata and Sasuke both have blue tints in their hair.
for my real hair I use garnier's black blue hair dye. My hair was redyed a while ago with blonde-ish highlights so that helped made it appear alot easier.
That turned my hair black, and a little hint: keep the hair dye in your hair for atleast an hour to help the blue tints appear ;)
If that doesnt help, I applied blue mascara or this nifty little product by Got 2 Be (not sure if it is) its a tempo hair dye that comes in a bottle with a comb appliator. Its a liquid base so it wont dry out like the spray on ones. I placed some on my hands and ran it through my hair, added hair spray and presto! More blue tints appeared.
For wigs that you get in a black base, usually its impossible to dye a wig thats darker than the dye. Get a blue sharpie or a copic marker and run it through the wig. That way, you will achieve the blue tints you need for an almost authentic and perfectionist look B)
hope that helped.

nope. I would suggest first styling the wig on a wig stand or wig head or have someone wear it and style it. If its a no cap wig, meaning it doesnt require you to wear a wig cap or hair net I would still suggest you clip it on your own hair. If you have long hair I would ask you wear a hair net and use ball point hair pins and pin the wig through your hair net and onto your real hair so you can move it around and not have it fall off ;) kasi, usually the weight of the wig (pony tail) might drag it down

just think of it this way: you can never spend too much on a good wig. Just think about all the damange you could cause your hair! (I learned the hair day :P )
and you can always reuse wigs for other costumes.
I rewriten the guide up as to how to redye/recolor wigs to reuse for other characters, I will continue to add 'how to style' wigs/hairs like a characters.
currently working on: tutorial for "Ed Wigs and real hair" as well as "Shuyin wigs"

well, ang masasabi ko lang is to try to get it done professionally if you have not tried dying your hair on your own. Saka, that one requires bleaching.
if you have dark hair (like most pinoys  ) you would first need to dye your hair brown. have the hair dresser leave a certain portion of your hair (front parts) untouched by the brown dye. Or do it yourself. If its done profesionally they would know what to do, but if your doing it on your own, ito ang suggestion ko: find decent hair dye! instead of leaving it on for 30-40 mins. Leave it on for atleast an hour so you get the brown color you want.
but honestly, I would get it done profesionally since your bleaching the front.
Also, be warned na madadamage talaga ang buhok mo! This is the risk your taking if you dont want to use a wig and you will have to live with blonde hair on the front and brown on the back for a long while  or until you redye it back to black.
After washing out the brown coloring, you would then need to bleach the front ends. Ulet! Leave it to the professionals! pero, meron ring nabibili na bleach home kit but I dont know where to get them sa pinas. And I wouldnt suggest bleaching your own hair, especially for just a few strands like that on your own without previous experience.

I do wig style commissions. pero sa america ako. I can strike up a deal ;)
but...what you could do is get a short haired wig in a blonde color and part some of the wig and dye that part brown with either a wig dye or a brown sharpie.

I see... ^^ Hehe Thanks! Where do i get wig dyes anyway??
*apologizes for the short posts* >.< Anyway, so that means if i do resort to coloring my hair, that means i'll have to dye it black again?? Hmm... (is smacked by captain obvious)
Whoops, sorry. T_T So if i dye it back to black again, will i be able to color it again??
Chibi-kun - December 21, 2005 09:52 AM (GMT)
you'll be killing your hair by bleaching it and dying it back to black. Black can penetrate any color but by dying it black, it means you cannot bleach it again since nothing can penetrate black hair dye. You simply let it slide or wait until your next hair cut.
wigs are better. If you look at my first post. I have a link to Katie Bair's website where she sells wig dyes. But you can use sharpies/markers to dye a wig. (see first post for more info)
I suggest getting the wig in blonde and just sharpie the rest of it brown.
Save your hair the damage.

Wig Dyes - How to reuse wigs as well
yes, we all know na mahal ang mga wigs and hair is more expensive. Let your hair live and invest in a wig!
there are several stores in Manila that sells wigs and if you know any, please feel free to share them so people will know ;)
its also possible to purchase them through the internet, most of these sellers are US Based but they have excellent custom services. One of the best:
Cosplay.com
Amphigory
Karen's Wigs
China Wigs
Q:How do I dye a wig?
A: First of, as I've said in the previous first post is that the wig must be lighter than the color your dying it with. Katie Bair sells wig dyes but it is possible to make your own. Alot of people 'harvest' their wig dyes from the inks in sharpies/markers by opening them up and dunking them in a spray bottle with 70% alcohol and spraying it on the wig. It is also possible that you can just take the marker and run it through the wig by hand.
Both Sharpies and Copic Markers work well, but Copic markers are more expensive but they come in a wider range of color.
After looking through cosplay.com Honey Bunny clarified it is possible to make your own without having to crack open sharpies/copic markers to harvest their inks. FW Acrylic Artists Ink can be bought in several colors and in many art stores. By dropping a few drops of ink into a cup of 70% alcohol in a spray bottle works well enough on a white wig. To darken or lighten the wig dye you can add 2-3 drops of black or white ink into the mixture before spraying it on.
and leaving it to dry for several hours and brushing off the excess after a couple of hours or washing it with cold water. Hot water will only melt away the ink.
Q: How can I lighten the color of a wig?
A: Lets face it, you can always get a wig in the lightest blonde color but its not exactly white. White wigs works best with most wig dying techniques especially for wigs that require light colors. (IE: Maya from Tenjou Tenge).
First off, if you didnt read the first post I will remind you
Wigs are not hair. They are made of plastic fibers so using bleach will not work. Leaving the wig out in the sun for several hours will actually lighten it but note that you do not have control whatsoever on how light the wig can get.
Q: How to reuse wigs - How to get rid of the color/dye in a wig?
A: Usually if you want to reuse a wig or just made a mistake in coloring you can easily get rid of the dye you used in the wig (this will not lighten the wig)
place the wig in a big zip lock bag and pour alcohol in it. Shake the wig around it until you think its completely clean off the wig dye. But doing this will get rid of the shine in the wig so you can always reconditioner it later to give its shine back.
hope this helps :D

Hi everybody!
does anyone here know where I can find a silver wig that is medium lengthed? just like Dante pogi of Devil May Cry 3.
astig pa nga kung mismong ganun
Chibi-kun - December 25, 2005 12:59 AM (GMT)
for online purchases you can find it here not sure how close it is exactly to Dante's hair style but its silver nonetheless. pag di nyo makuha through online purchase since it usually requires paypal, I can purchase it for you and you can send me the money through another form of transaction. But if thats not exactly the style your looking for, that selller sells other wigs in silver that can be easily styled. I also do wig commissions - styling, dying etc.

i think its okay, i use spray paint for my synthetic HC III-X wig ^^ (na hindi ko man lang official nagamit o_O) basta icomb mo sya at ikorte mo para hindi maging 'clumpy' ung epek nya....
eto balak ko kung itutuloy ko cloud ko...i shall find a 'ruined' wig, and with yellow spray paint, pwede sya kortehin dahil syntehtic nga

it is completely safe to dye wigs! ;) on the first few posts and on the other previous pages there should be a long post regaurding dying wigs. Hope that should help.
As for hair spray dyes. they tend to come out pretty bad. horrible nonetheless I would highly recommend investing in a wig since you can always redye it over and over and its pretty safe to do so. There is also another option as opposed to using the spray on dyes. Theres the ones that comes in a bottle with a comb applicator. It goes on easily and it doesnt dry your hair at all.
Now if its only colored highlights your looking for. Mascara now comes in reds, greens, and blues. You can always run the mascara applicator through your hair.

pag ang option nyo talaga is to use the hair spray on dye. So you can get a nice coverage and wont dry out. Open the can and drain the dye out of the can and apply it through your hair with your hands.
or get the one that comes in a bottle with a comb applicator. They tend to come out better.
