*Brief Intro/explanation
(taken from Chemical Process Industries, SHREVE/Third Edition)
The development of plastics from laboratory curiosities to products tailored to industry’s needs has bought new and economical materials of construction to the engineer and the designer.
The use of plastic materials for any specific application
is dependent upon its composition, its particular properties, and design of the part. Polystyrene (One of the oldest synthetic resins and is third in production level. The styrene resins are used extensively for packaging foams and for sheets.)
Zzzzzz…….
Ok, have I put you to sleep yet?
First things first, all you have to do is follow this simple steps,
1. You must have a good reference picture, a sketch, a colored drawing, layout design, etc.
E.g. if you want to recreate something like cloud’s 6pc super cool
weapon, here is a link of its
3D model (astig)2. You must have the proper
tools and materials.For the weapon:
a.The main material which will be often used when making a weapon
(Especially the big ones) is the rigid insulation foam (malaki, makapal at malapad na Styrofoam board, polystyrene)
E.g. refer to this tutorial in making
huge oversized swords, and this one too, Inuyasha’s tesaiga.(temporary offline, sorry guys)
Note:Where to get this stuff? Click
here or if you bought any appliance like ref or tv, you can always use the styro which came with it.
b.sand paper
c.fiber glass cloth
d.epoxy, vulca seal
e.spray paint
f.well ventilated area, craft knife, scissors etc., protective gear etc*mask, gloves
For the armor:
a.The main material used in making armors is the polystyrene sheeting kung nakakita na kayo ng foam na nasa loob ng sapatos, makinis at medyo manipis na pwede putulin ng gunting, clear o maputi ang kulay, flexible, yun un, and craft foam.
(di ako sure kung ang craft foam ba ay manipis na urethane foam, which can be the best material if you want to build yourself a very impressive gundam suit, kasi u can re shape it by heat) you can see the gundam tutorial
hereNote:Or you can always use cardboard, same rules apply but there are always downsides like its strength but are cheap and can cut down your expenses in a great deal.
b.Clear plastic, medyo makapal pero see through, like yung mga ginagamit sa pag acetate, o ginagamit sa pag gawa ng mga cel animation.
c.Other materials mentioned in amethyst angel’s tutorial, like glue gun, glue sticks, scissors, etc. are always available at divisoria or at any National book store outlet.
Note:Here’s a CLEAR and Concise Tutorial on how to make your own Armors from
Amethyst Angel site. The complete list of shops are listed
here including some materials which can be substituted with the local materials that can be bought here in the Phil
3.Dedication, hard work, pag-iingat din kasi you’ll gonna use some sharp tools too when carving the rough outline of your weapon, always remember some safety guide lines:
1.Always work on a well ventilated area, which has enough or has a large space for your materials
*garage, lawn, etc
2.Never work when you feel sleepy, tired or under the influence of alcoholic beverages, or dangerous substances etc. It will only lead to serious injuries.
3.You must equip yourself with the proper protective gear like mask, goggles, and rubber gloves (if needed). It is very dangerous to inhale or touch some of the substance, vapors, or the little particles which can cause damage to your health.
4.Styrene and hot glue are both
thermo-sensitive, meaning they can melt when subjected to prolonged heat as mentioned by amethyst angel.
5.Here are some other helpful tips, still from
Amethyst Angel.
tumawa pa *cguro napahiya cya ng konti, but being the cosplayer that he is, he still managed to proceed sa pag present nung pinag hirapan nya na costume at weapon.

my suggestion would be, try to find a toy knife/dagger/sword, with a similar handle... then just modify the blade
if you can't find some... do it from scratch... you can try my suggestion below.
ok... for the handle, get a pvc pipe, cut it to the desired lenght of the handle, with one inch allowance.
next step would be cutting an illustration board to the shape of the blade and hand guard of the sword
then... cut one inch deep on one side of the pvc pipe going across diameter of the circle of the pipe.
Just work the design from there... by cutting the designs of the hand guard and handle out of illustration broad then sticking it to the base, and/or combining paper mache.
Ok.. if you want the blade to have dimention... just draw and color out the edge of the dagger. Ok for real dimention, layer the illustration board on both sides of it, by cutting two pieces smaller (to the size of the spine/middle part of the blade)and paper maché the sides to even out the effect.
For the red round ball at the butt off the sword, just use a small Christmas ball... and for the ends of the hand guard, you can maybe use small plastic eggs... don't forget to incorporate them by sticking them to the base and incorporating it with paper maché/layering of the illustration board for the design.
Mahirap gumawa ng written instruction.. ; di ako magaling dun... I'd prefer it if I will just show you. ;
Note:Maganda talaga na matibay ang base o kaya naman patibayin mo ito, kaya nga ginamitan nang fiber glass cloth, epoxy o vulca seal (please refer to the
tesaiga tutorial) kasi madalimg mag crumble ang styropore.
Note:But always remember to be careful; because
some substances can react badly or can have a chemical reaction with Styrofoam, does ruining your material (The use of plastic materials for any specific application is
dependent upon its composition, its particular properties, and design of the part.)
E.g. rugby and styro don’t mix
Note:Sa tingin ko, Shops which are located at malls, tend to slap much higher price kesa sa mga medyo di kilala o hindi sa mall nagbebenta, well minsan vice versa( basic supply/demand) at minsan makakahaggle pa kayo katulad sa divisoria na hindi magagawa sa malls.
