Title: Philippines in World Cosplay Summit
Description: Inevitable

polence - September 15, 2006 04:23 PM (GMT)
I know many in the Philippine cosplay community know what the World Cosplay Summit is. Many of us wish that we can be able to send a representative there, and many of us can say that it is inevitable. I know it would be a big adjustment for us to follow it's guidelines, thus I posted this topic so we can gather feedback and a partial preparation of the community.

Please bear in mind that this guideline is not official in any way, and just a VERY GOOD picture of what we will encounter if there would be a preliminary competition for the Philippine representative. Also, many countries are observing this kind of guidelines and rules.

At stake for the winner is....

Trip to Nagoya, Japan to represent the Philippines in the WCS
Financial assistance for a (dream) costume/s.

Post your reactions, concerning:

1. What do you think about having a representative from the Philippines in the WCS?
2. What do you think about the guidelines and regulations of the competition?

*refrain from mixing-in unrelated topics like Philipine Cosplay Politics and others, unless it is absolutely relevant to this topic*

The guidelines are too long to post here, please visit the link below....

whoa!^_^ it's nice to know that our fellow Filipino cosplayers abroad support this.^_^

just curious.... if rules would allow you to compete for the preliminaries, would you like to cosplay to represent the Philippines?^_^

Here's a news broadcast on WCS 2006. Towards the end, one of the heads from the Cultural Exchange Department at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs talks about the significance of cosplay and the event.

The WCS 2007 prelims look like they have room for one more country. ;)

I'm just hoping one of those slots is for the Philippines.

Let's cross our fingers that the Philippine preliminaries organizers will move a bit faster it's already September.

I think it would be an absolute honor to represent the Philippines at WCS, and I would LOVE the chance. Though I think it really needs to go to someone who cosplays in the country. :D I grew up in the Philippines and everything, but I've long exchanged my green passport for a blue one. I'm proud of calling myself a Filipino cosplayer, of course, and nothing makes me happier to watch the community grow in the Philippines.

I'm not quite sure what the cosplay 'politics' are in Pinas though.
The standard of cosplay in the US is way high and hardcore. Most respected cosplayers here are outstanding seamstress. The more skills you have when it comes to sewing your own costumes, the more respect other people have. I have friends like Lindze and Christy who invests a lot of creative time to make their costumes, and back in the days, they would compete a lot.

Out here, masquerade rules requires all cosplayers to have made their costumes themselves.

The people who compete and win the WCS that represent for the US are judged by the same standards.

Most of the time, people who compete but had their costumed made professionaly or tailored by someone else is frowned upon. But only in competitions! Otherwise, it doesn't matter on the convention floor. ^_^

It's so nice.... I was thinking, if the organizers here will talk to the WCS org, and arrange something regarding cosplayers with the same situation as you do, it might be possible. I believe there are many of you out there, who might want the chance to represent the Philippines for WCS. Though, if you would be joining the preliminaries, it may eliminate your chance to represent your adopted country now, plus you will still have to go here to compete for the prelims......will that be ok with you?^_^;

I see... I share the same sentiment. Anyway.... Philippine cosplay politics, it's way bigger than anyone out there who wishes personal gain and profit from cosplaying. So... I think politics should be set aside from now on, when it comes to this kind of things, we need to focus on the competition, supporting the representatives and helping each other out instead of bickering.

Eventhough I haven't cosplayed overseas yet, or to any cosplay competition catering to these rules, I have a good idea how skill (specially for their clothing construction skills), plays a big part in the judging. Thanks for clafiying that fact, and I know many of the local cosplayers here will definitely be frowning upon the rules, since it wouldn't allow them to join using their tailored or professionally made costumes. ^_^;

Many of those, who have won competitions here (almost all) have had their costumes comissioned.... that includes me, I have won many competitions, in a commissioned costume. Only a hand full of cosplayers here won using their own fully home made costumes, usually the the likes of mecha and armored type costumes, which I think is one of the the strongest asset the community here has.

In the cosplay competitions here, it is common the rules allow people to join in proffessionally commissioned or tailored costumes, which would be a big adjustment for many, if they wish to join the WCS prelims, along with the inspection of costumes, strict observation of presentation time, and a very formal and objective judging process. Nonetheless, I really believe there would be MANY people out there who can abide/conform with these rules with out much trouble for their part.

About allowing people wear comissioned costumes on the floor during the prelims... I think that would be a good idea, but I don't think it would make much of a good impression on the international judges, if the comissioned ones looks way better than the ones in the competition itself. :P

too bad this place stinks. i mean THIS place. not the PHILs.

maganda yung idea na mapasama tayo. pero kung mga kagaya ng isang manyakis lamang ang masasali. kalimutan na natin.

i hope and pray that somebody who doesn't respect other people, won't get in this.

no chance at all.
